Struggling to find their seat at the table, mountain bikers have had to form unlikely partnerships in their fight to ride. Little did they know they were actually helping transform the identity of their communities. Specialized and Soil Searching present Biketown, a film by Freehub magazine.
Mountain bikers have a long-standing tradition of working with private property owners, land managers and governments, from the local to federal level. Often, these relationships are driven by a dedicated and passionate group of mountain bikers, trailbuilders and advocates, despite a sometimes turbulent and confrontational past. Biketown takes a deep dive into recreational trail development in Chisholm, Minnesota, Bellingham, Washington, Snowshoe, West Virginia and Pacific City, Oregon to explore themes at the heart of the current mountain bike movement—whether that be cooperation between the timber industry and a mountain bike community, federal forest managers and trailbuilders or advocacy organizations and tourism boards.

Chilly & Milly is an animated documentary exploring my father’s chronic health problems as a diabetic with kidney failure, and my mother’s role as his stalwart caretaker. Shot in miniature, it combines 3D modeled/composited characters with cinema verité scenes from a documentary I shot over 13 years ago.
It is a story of love and resiliency in the face of hardship, turmoil, and the encroaching death of a loved one.

"When I got the brief, something jumped out to me. I’d never seen a boxing film before that heroes the physical space of a ring. The four angles of the canvas. The corners.
I built an idea out that told the stories of two amazing figures, Terence Crawford and Israel Madrimov, through the inverted and sometimes positive protrusions of a corner. We would be transported to Omaha Nebraska or a small town in Uzbekistan all based on the interaction with their corners of the ring. Sometimes we would match cut, other times we would build sets into the corners, creating a sort of collage of their life within the square.”
"Quando ho ricevuto il brief, qualcosa mi è saltato all'occhio. Non avevo mai visto prima un film di boxe che mettesse in risalto lo spazio fisico di un ring. I quattro angoli della tela. Gli angoli. Project inspired by Nature and organically animated shapes
When light passes from one medium to another with different
properties, its direction and speed of propagation changes and the
phenomenon of refraction occurs.
Variations in color, shape and vibrancy are manifestations that allow us
to feel that changes occur when light passes from one layer to another.
This relationship is one of the oldest elements of the human mind,which
made it possible to highlight the relative uniformity of natural
conditions in different places.
I have created this sequence for the observation and experimentation of the phenomenon of collision of surface and light when it changed angle and speed

"The ideals of liberty, equality, and fraternity"
For too long, surfing has been the preserve of the privileged. Those fortunate enough to reside on coastal regions. Those fortunate enough to afford boards and wetsuits. To be fortunate enough to have the surrounding infrastructure to train, to have others go before them. To be lucky enough to live in Southern California. In South West France. In Sydney. To be able to surf all day and not worry about providing for a family. To be home schooled and only focus on ‘pro’ surfing. Barriers to entry that those fortunate to do it wouldn’t even recognise existed; the statement “all you need is a board and a wetsuit” reflecting so acutely the nonchalance of the privileged few.
And yet, we hope those days are behind us. With the amazing work of groups such as Postive Vibe Warriors, Black Girls Surf and Juju surf club to name but a handful. Barriers are being broken down and we hope, with fingers crossed and a collective goodwill in the right direction that not only are the barriers being lowered, but tossed aside as surfing provides a means of empowerment to those less fortunate.
This movement is being lead by examples and role models the world over. Perfectly crystallised with the Billabong stablemates of Italo Ferreira, Cherif Fall and Joshe Faulkner. A far cry from your cookie cutter pro surfers, three real people with three real stories, role models and examples in their own right from their own communities right up to the world stage.
We’d been to Senegal before. The friendliest place we’d ever visited. The nation state of fun waves and all time vibes. So when Billabong called the WT hotline, and rumour reached our ears of a return trip, it wasn’t a though process worth considering—before even asking why we were in. When the why came, on a surprise trip with the World Champ, gold medallist and all round now über superstar Italo Ferreira to visit our old friend Cherif along with Joshe Faulkner—we were in, hook line and sinker. Two weeks later, we land in Dakar, fresh PCR tests in hand. We’re met with by old friends at the airport, a sense of familiarity but ever the presence of the unknown.

Something is coming. A pre-pandemic harbinger of indifference to troubled times, digitally depopulating and re-orchestrating documentary footage frame-by-frame before lockdowns became reality.
Busy scenes shot in early 2017 were meticulously rotoscoped over a three-year period, often involving recreation/reanimation of figures on a limb-by-limb, joint-by-joint basis, using available elements from other frames. There are no visual effects besides the rearrangement of genuinely-captured assets.

of stop motion while embracing the limitless possibilities of AI.
Over 3000 images were meticulously crafted, combining stop motion
and collage techniques with a diverse array of prompts.
This project also serves as an exploration into the artist's connection to their work,
probing the depth of personal effort required to truly bond with one's creation.

Synopsis:
To be able to live in Bogotá, you need a skin than can adapt, that can
turn reptilian when it doesn't stop raining for weeks and that can go
soft when the woman in the corner shop gives you a free morning coffee.
Thick Skin is a dance film that takes the viewer through the Colombian
capital high above the Andes with stylized movement that speaks of life
in the bustling city.
