The multi artist Herbert Achternbusch turns 70. A
life of 30 films, 20 plays, hundreds of pictures of art, many volumes of
prose and novels. One of the most creative, most uncompromising and
unconventional German filmmakers.

regista, scrittore e sceneggiatore tedesco (Monaco 1938). Profondamente
radicato nell'ambiente tradizionalista e provinciale della natia Baviera
è, per i suoi atteggiamenti anarcoidi e spregiudicati, il prototipo
dell'artista che vive al di fuori di tutte le convenzioni. Dopo annose
controversie con la censura, si è assicurato una posizione di tutto
rispetto come autore e regista teatrale e cinematografico. Il suo
radicalismo si manifesta fin dall'aspetto esteriore dei suoi testi privi
d'impaginazione, interrotti e frammentati da collage e foto dipinte,
nel linguaggio scurrile che richiama quello del comico bavarese Karl
Valentin e, nel teatro, in cambi di scena repentini e nel differimento
arbitrario dei tempi. La sua vastissima opera è una costante riflessione
su un io “sull'orlo del baratro” e trae ispirazione dal travaglio
interiore cui si vanno sovrapponendo, di volta in volta, le angosce del
quotidiano, dalla minaccia ecologica a quella bellica, retaggio di un
passato sempre ben vivo. Tra le opere in prosa si ricordano: Die Alexanderschlacht (1971; La battaglia di Alessandro); Land in Sicht (1977; Terra in vista); Wind (1984; Vento); Die Föhnforscher (1985; Gli studiosi del föhn); Breitenbach (1986). Tra le opere teatrali: Ella (1978); Gust (1984); Der Stiefel und sein Socken (1993; Lo stivale e il suo calzetto); Letzter Gast (1996; L'ultimo avventore); Meine Grabinschrift (1996; La scritta sulla mia tomba). Tra gli scritti autobiografici: Der letzte Schliff (1997; L'ultimo ritocco). Tra i film: Das Andechser Gefühl (1975; Sensazioni di Andechs); Der Neger Erwin (1981; Il negro Erwin); Das letzte Loch (1981; L'ultimo buco); Das Gespenst (1983; Il fantasma); Ab nach Tibet (1994; Via in Tibet). Nel 1986 ha pubblicato il volumetto illustrato Ich bin kein Schaaf. Memoiren (Non sono una pecora. Memorie).
Cult director Herbert Achternbusch has directed nearly thirty films and ten plays, acted, written novels and essays and he also paints, yet he remains an inscrutable man for his audience. Andi Niessner, who formed part of the production team on two of his latest major features, allows a glimpse behind the veil in Achternbusch. Achternbusch, who stopped making films in 2002 despite great respect, left a very idiosyncratic oeuvre. In it, he reveals himself to be an uncompromising and unconventional film maker, with an explicit love-hate relationship with his birthplace in Bavaria. In the documentary, Achternbusch speaks openly about his parents, religion, his childhood and the early years of his creative career. Niessner travels with him to places he loves and intercuts these excursions with personal memories by his children and old friends Margarethe von Trotta, Gabi Geist, Dieter Dorn and Sepp Bierbichler. Achternbusch in turn speaks about colleague directors such as Schlöndorf, Von Trotta and Herzog. Slowly but surely, the partly self-imposed loneliness in which he works - having been in the past a frequent guest at the International Film Festival Rotterdam - acquires more relief.
