Across the nation hundreds of anti-trans bills have been put forward in a wave of transphobic fear that has swept throughout the conservative media, contributing to the death of 375 transgender people In 2021. In an era defined by negative publicity and ‘don’t say gay’ bills, Apayauq tells a different story.
In the fall of 2021, Apayauq called me and asked about sharing her story. We had become friends while I was producing a documentary about America’s public lands and remained in touch throughout her transition. She had competed in the Iditarod in 2019, now this was her opportunity to return to the race to compete as her correct gender.
In this political climate, stories like this need to be told. I said yes, borrowed her father’s snowmobile and followed her for more than 1,000 miles on the Iditarod trail, documenting her journey from Anchorage to Nome. This included camping out on the trail in -30 temperatures, crossing the Alaska Range on a snowmobile, and riding through 70 mph winds on the Bering Sea.
Our goal was to show her courage and dedication to this sport. To display the hateful messages she has endured and to tell how her family and community supported her. My hope is that this film will create deeper understanding and empathy for trans individuals and to celebrate one person’s groundbreaking achievement.

A fun film about a topic that scares me a lot.
In 2019, I gave backflipping a shot, but it didn't go well. Fear and a broken toe killed my confidence, and I gave up. To get past this, I made an avatar. The training of the avatar was based on the methods from the research paper "Deep Mimic," enabling it to learn to do backflips using machine learning, mimicking human moves, and learning from mistakes without the risk of getting hurt. This journey, full of wonder and discomfort due to A.I.’s potential, took three years to capture, resulting in the above documentary. The film delves into themes like ambition, facing fear, balancing control and uncertainty, aiming for excellence, grappling with the inevitability of technological advancements, accepting failure, and learning to let go.

At some point there seems to be a defining moment in life where you learn to let go. Sometimes, not by choice. And often times it comes to us as the illusion of defeat, while in reality, it was the very thing we needed to guide us to where we had to go.
About a year ago, Aaron and I came across the Buddhist word, Ensō. This single word, described everything that we had been talking about for the last year or so. By definition, it represents and suggests cutting the desire for perfection and allowing the universe to be just as it is.
Understanding that perfection doesn’t exist allows you to move through life gracefully free of any pressure. It opens the door to allow situations to unfold naturally, and to invite intuition and creativity to move through. For Aaron, riding is a great place to practice this concept. It’s a place that he can go where the universe can reveal these sort of secrets.
In this film, we ride along with Aaron as he takes a journey into the idea letting go and simply just being.

This is the most complete and extended opus from the ongoing series, exploring complexity emergence, based on the feedback loops.
Multidomain image-to-image transforming neural network StarGAN2 has
been used here recurrently, reprocessing its own output without
additional inputs. The models have been trained on both figurative
imagery and abstract art, to enrich and intensify visual & semantic
experience. Moreover, part of the training data was synthetic itself:
few source datasets were generated with custom StyleGAN2 models, adding
another layer of mediation to distance it even farther from the real.
What we eventually get is an ever-changing shape-shifting loosely
controlled abstract flux, which appears more lifelike and expressive on
its own, than obscure resemblance of the origin flesh, stuck in the
neural convolutions.

In Amharic, the word “tezeta,” has 3 meanings. It describes the concept of, “...memory, or the memory of loss and longing.” The term is also the name of a musical scale in traditional Ethiopian music, and, simultaneously, the name of an Amharic folk standard or ballad, which evokes a feeling of loss.
The legendary Ethiopian jazz keyboardist Hailu Mergia’s story is intertwined with “tezeta.” The atmospheric tone poem, It is a Soul, tracks aspects of Hailu’s journey from an iconic bandleader in the club scene of Addis Ababa in the 1970s, his immigration to the US during a decade of political repression and brutality in Ethiopia, and his public re-emergence as a performer in 2014 after a music publisher in New York began re-releasing his music. It is a Soul is a collaboration with Hailu which expresses both the longing so evident in his performances, as well as the celebration of the now.
At the height of the second wave of the vibrant Ethiopian jazz music scene, Hailu Mergia was a famous and beloved multi-instrumentalist and bandleader in Addis Ababa, performing with the Walias Band, the Dahlak Band and others. The Walias had a residency at the famed Hilton Hotel in Addis, where all of the biggest acts of the time performed until dawn, sometimes playing 8-10 hour sets for ecstatic crowds of dancers.
In 1977, Mengistu Haile Mariam and the Derg seized power in Ethiopia, overseeing a murderous and oppressive regime that snuffed out all political opposition and dissent in a period that became known as the Red Terror. However, in 198, Hailu and the Walias had established such notoriety as performers that they were granted permission to tour the United States. After the tour, Hailu and a few of his bandmates declared asylum in the US and began new lives.
Hailu left Addis Ababa at the height of his popularity, fleeing the Red Terror to start a new life in Washington, DC, where no one outside of the small Ethiopian diaspora community was familiar with his music.
Settling in Washington, Hailu continued to make music for himself for over 30 years while driving a taxi, working at a gas station, managing a club and doing whatever he had to in order to make a living. In 2014, Brian Shimkovitz– a young music publisher from Brooklyn – discovered Hailu’s music in a cassette shop in Addis Ababa. He tracked Hailu down and began re-releasing his music (never heard outside of Ethiopia) on his label, Awesome Tapes from Africa, to great acclaim. The past 7 years have been a rebirth for Hailu, and at 73 years old, he is finally receiving international recognition for his contributions as a musician.

"Now I Know Where to Find you" is a story about my childhood in Spain and the trip I made to Argentina when I was 12 years old. One day I decided that I wanted to live with my father. I missed him too much. 10,000 km later a whole new life began for me, but my childhood memories didn't fade away. And, of all these memories, the memory of my yaya (grandmother) was always vivid. She raised me as if I was her own son, when none of my parents were ready to do that.
The story stems from a unique discovery that I made while wandering around with Google Maps. This discovery was so moving that I felt the need to tell the story, my story.
