Plot Summary

The Acolytes seek out Magneto in Asteroid M, pledging to serve him in his cause. But does Magneto even still have a cause? If he does, will the X-Men have cause to oppose it?
Note: Magneto sunk the Leningrad in Uncanny X-Men #150.

Synopsis

In space, a craft tries to outrun three others. The passengers of the lead ship stole it from S.H.I.E.L.D. so as to find Asteroid M. One of the trailing ships fires warning shots, which is returned by fire that takes out one of the three ships. With one ship down, the other two are determined to take the lead ship out, even though they'd be firing over Russian airspace. Before they can, however, a bright flash streaks before them. Magneto appears and rips the ships apart, informing the passengers that he is no longer concerned with Earth and that he will return them as a warning not to mess with him. One of the people searching for Magneto begs to be allowed to stay on Asteroid M, especially since the group (from the lead ship, the Acolytes) want to get Magneto back in the action on Earth. They ask how he can turn his back on his kind at the time that he is needed most.
In Russia, Colonel Fury is called into council to discuss Magneto's presence in their airspace. Knowing that the Acolytes stole the ship to find Magneto, the government can't help but take protective measures. They want to initiate the Magneto Protocols. Fury understands their concern but believes calling in the X-Men may be a better solution.
The X-Men are in New York and beginning a practice session. The mutants in the field are to infiltrate the X-Mansion and locate and capture the Professor, who has Jean Grey by his side. As the Professor waits for the training to begin, he and Jean discuss his dream. He still questions it from time to time, but Jean assures him that if the dream were dead then none of the X-Men would be there.
The training begins. Outside the mansion, Rogue gets some defensive missiles to lock onto her. She zooms around and has the missiles take out the launchers. Too bad for her that she can't avoid the very next wave of missiles. Archangel and Colossus have a different approach: brute strength. Archangel flies the human form of Colossus up and throws him at the mansion. Colossus, turning into his metal form in midair, bursts into the mansion and confronts the Professor; Jean, however, is able to stop him telepathically from taking the Professor.
Underground, Wolverine, Psylocke, and Gambit creep towards their goal. They had been successful thus far in infiltrating the mansion without being detected but the gig is up. Robots spring up to accost the trio. As Wolverine and Psylocke rip into the robots, scanners lose trace of Gambit. He, it seems, has found his way into the room with the Professor and Jean. He quickly dispatches Jean with some cards. Ever the romantic, he leans in for a victor's kiss. Jean explodes, as she and the "Professor" are just decoy robots. With Cyclops, Beast, and the real Jean and Professor momentarily sidetracked in a monitoring room, Wolverine rips into the room and, with a very violent gesture, "takes" the Professor. Cyclops is angry, as one slip by Wolverine could have really hurt the Professor. Wolverine explains that it was all part of the plan: Psylocke temporarily masked Wolverine's presence so that he could make the grand entrance. The two men can't see eye to eye and Wolverine stomps out.
Some time later, Colonel Fury informs the X-Men about the possible threat of Magneto over Russia. The Professor promises to help out in any way he can. For the time being, he decides to split his huge team of X-Men into two groups so as to respond more effectively to any given situation.
On Asteroid M, the passengers of the ships awaken and immediately grow hostile towards each other. The Acolytes, mutants, find that their powers have been dampened. Too bad, as the humans have ordnance suits that still operate. One person makes a show of the effectiveness of this weaponry but is unable to use it because of the presence of Magneto. He informs him that they are all guests and must behave as such. On of the Acolytes runs to plead for sanctuary when on of the humans opens fire and wounds the Acolyte. Very unhappy, Magneto forces the man to turn his guns onto himself as a just punishment. Fabian Cortez, the spokesman for the Acolytes, attempts to convince that, despite Magneto's statements that he no longer has a cause to fight for, there is something worth protecting on Earth.
As the Blue Team prepares to leave (a team consisting of Cyclops, Wolverine, Psylocke, Beast, Rogue, and Gambit), Magneto pulls the Leningrad from the depths of the sea. He finds that some of the nuclear missiles are still operable. As he pulls them out, the X-Men arrive and confront him. Automatically assuming the worst, various attempts are made to attack. Beast and Gambit try a sneak attack, but Beast is taken out by a massive blast to the gut and Gambit is dispatched by his own charged cards. Psylocke gets in a great kick, but she is also taken out by a metallic tentacle. Wolverine is next and takes a mighty swipe at Magneto, gashing his chest. Cyclops blasts Magneto through a wall. Seeing Wolverine coming for him again, he propels Wolverine into Cyclops and departs for Asteroid M with the missiles in tow. Rogue follows him in hopes to talk. She realizes that talking would have probably worked all along. Magneto explains that he's simply trying to protect his home. Just then, a jet flies in and shoots Rogue out of the sky. Enraged, Magneto detonates one of the bombs while taking the rest to Asteroid M.
In his chambers, Magneto is surrounded by his Acolytes. He collapses with the wound Wolverine gave him. Fabian explains that the X-Men must pay. Magneto can't figure why his own kind must die to protect all the rest of the mutants and Fabian explains that the goals just don't match. He then offers to heal Magneto with his mutant powers.

Cyclops gets a message from the Professor that Rogue has been found in the island nation of Genosha. She awakens to find Chief Magistrate Anderson asking for her help to combat some terrorists on the island. Just then, the terrorists show up. It's the Acolytes and they are trying to purge Genosha due to its mistreatment of mutants in the past. The X-Men arrive and effectively take out the terrorists, but then Magneto appears and collects his Acolytes. He then declares that Asteroid M is a sovereign nation in which all mutants are citizens - they need only make the trip.
In New York, Banshee finds Moira MacTaggert in hysterics. For some reason, she thinks she's responsible for the terrible thing that is happening.

The 100 Greatest Marvels of All Time #7 - #4 released by Marvel on December 1, 2001
Months ago we asked you: "What are your favorite Marvel comics of all time?" Now, after endless hours of tabulations, discussions and all-out arguments, The House is ready to release the results! This issue contains choice #4... but what story is it? The countdown has begun , so get ready to experience the best of the best!
This issue reprints Giant-Size X-Men #1
The issue serves as a link between the original X-Men and a new team of X-Men.

Chapter One - It's the introduction of new X-Men, called by Xavier one by one: Nightcrawler (he escaped from an angry mob from a small village in Germany with help of Prof. Xavier), Wolverine (from governmental facilities in Canada), Storm (who believed she was a Goddess in Kenya and helped locals with rain), Colossus (from a crop field in Siberia, where he had just saved his young sister Illyana from a runaway tractor) and Thunderbird (from a reservation on Arizona) and the already known Banshee and Sunfire.
Chapter Two - Cyclops tells the new X-Men about what happened to the old team. Cyclops, Angel, Iceman, Marvel Girl, Lorna Dane and Havok ( Beast had left X-Men before the mission) had discovered a new mutant menace in an island in the South Pacific - Krakoa. When they arrived, something strange happened and the only thing Cyclops remembered is that he awakes without his powers inside the X-Jet, going back on auto-pilot to the mansion. That's why Professor Xavier called all these new mutants, to help the X-Men.
Chapter Three - The new X-Men team are heading to Krakoa, with Cyclops as their leader. He divides the group into four pairs, and they all face different problems after landing: Cyclops and Thunderbird have to defeat a living tree, Storm and Colossus have to destroy a living avalanche of rocks, Banshee and Wolverine battle against two giant lobsters and Nightcrawler and Sunfire were attacked by giant birds. They all succeed on their battles and go to an old temple in the middle of the island. There they break a big wall and enter the temple, where they find the rest of the X-Men - Iceman, Marvel Girl, Angel, Lorna Dane and Havok - trapped on strange roots. After they release them, Havok tells Cyclops that the island of Krakoa is alive, and that it wants to capture them all.
Chapter Four - The island Krakoa is alive and wants the X-Men to drain their energy and feed itself. That's why Krakoa had released Cyclops, to go get more mutants to the Island. The X-Men start to use all their powers on the Island, but no one is able to battle it. Then, Professor Xavier mentally appears, and uses his mental powers on Krakoa, while he tells Cyclops his plan. Storm starts to use all her powers to drain the energy of lightening on Lorna Dane, who starts to accumulate the magnetic power. The rain let the Island grow bigger and send Xavier astral form back to the mansion. Then, Cyclops and Havok use their powers on Lorna and the magnetic waves reach Earth's interior, causing the island of Krakoa to erupt to space. In the local where Krakoa used to be, a giant whirlpool appears, jeopardizing the X-Men. Iceman creates an ice globe surrounding them and they manage to escape safely.
At the end, Angel says to everyone: "What are we going to do with 13 X-Men?"

The Big Ret-Con - Deadly Genesis

One of the biggest ret-cons in the history of Marvel comics (probably second to Jean Grey's NOT being Dark Phoenix) was when Marvel decided that the events of Giant-size X-men #1 didn't happen the way we think. There were lots of effects that came out of this massive alteration of history.
  • We finally learned of the 3rd Summers brother (Vulcan) which was hinted as far back as X-men Vol. 2
  • Krakoa was not a sentient lifeform but just a collection of impulses and urges stemming from radiation (although the son of Krakoa in Excalibur was shown to be intelligent.
  • We find out that Storm's team was not the second group of X-men, but the 3rd after Vulcan, Petra, Sway and Darwin.
  • Cyclops wasnt freed by Krakoa, he was freed by the second group of X-men before they were defeated.
  • This is the beginning of the dissolution of the relationship between Scott and Charles.

The Watcher starts this issue talking about Phoenix background - this only should be a warning that this issue is special for Marvel Universe.
The X-Men were transported from Earth last issue, and now find themselves on a Shi’ar ship in the presence of Lilandra, Araki and Gladiator. The X-Men are ordered by Lilandra to hand over Jean, as she is a threat to the whole universe. Gladiator tells everyone what the Phoenix had done to an entire world after destroying a star. Xavier challenges Lilandra to a duel for the life of Jean Grey. After Lilandra talks to her allies at this subject - the Supreme Intelligence from the Krees and Empress R'Kll from the Skrulls, she acept the challenge.
The X-Men have one night to rest before the battle of their lifes. Jean is alone at her room and thinks about what she had become and had done as Phoenix. While training Nightcrawler is questioning if he should help Jean or not, because what she had done to that planet and its people. He suddenly fells from the walls but is helped by Angel, who also has doubts about Jean. Wolverine is at his room thinking about the battle and that no matter what happens, he would choose Jean. Beast is in enjoying a bubble bath thinking about what Lilandra did, imposing Jean's death without even a trial. Colossus wakes up in his room thinking about Jean's love and Phoenix's hate, and that they are two different person and do not deserve the same destiny. Storm also wakes up thinking about Africa, her life with the X-Men and about Jean, who is almost a sister to her and she will defend to the death. And finally Cyclops is starring at Earth from a window and also thinking about his fate as X-Men leader and Jean's lover. Cyclops thinks he understands Lilandra's decision but he couldn't just give Jean away without a fight. Then Jean enters his room wearing her old Marvel Girl costume. They kiss and tell how much they love each other.
Later the X-Men and the Imperial Guard are teleported to the Blue Area of the moon where they will battle. The Krees and Skrulls say that they should have judges at the battle, and then the Kree Bel-Dann and the Skrull Raksor are sent to the Moon also.
Angel tries to fly over the camp battle but in a place with low gravity his wings are stronger and he almost fly of the moon, being helped by Storm. Cyclops devides the team in two and each group fight against some members of the Imperial Guard. Starbolt shoots fire at Cyclops, Jean, Nightcrawler and Angel's group, while Oracle, Manta and Smasher attack them. In another place, Warstar attack Colossus and Beast while Gladiator throws Storm and Wolverine away. Wolverine fells inside the Watcher domaisn and is banned from there. Storm is then attacked by Earthquake and defeated by Hussar. Oracle disoriented Angel and Smasher throws him to a tunnel and Nightcrawler jump after him. At the ground he encounters Manta, and she quickly defeats him. Wolverine is then attacked by Raksor in the shape of Storm, but he senses that something is wrong and attacks the skrull. Bel-Dann helps him and that starts a battle between the Kree and the Skrull. Colossus defeats C'cil but B'nee defeats Beast and Gladiator shows up to punches Colossus. After a huge battle between the two, Gladiator is the winner.
Cyclops and Jean are the last X-Men to remain. Cyclops is then taken down and this causes the Dark Phoenix to reemerge. Professor Xavier then realizes that the things have gone too far and that he has to save the Universe. He tells the X-Men to fight her and they do. After she became weakened, Colossus stops a punch that would have killed her and then Jean takes control one more time. Jean asks Cyclops to kill her, because she couldn't stop the Phoenix Force and that she is frightened but one part of her like that feeling of power. At the end she kills herself in front of Cyclops, unwilling to take the risk of ever harming another life again. The Recorder tries to understand why she had done that, and the Watcher tells him that she did because she was still human, the only race capable of self sacrifice. The Watcher also says that even the X-Men never realize, this is the greatest victory of their lives.
