Paul Sika
was born in 1985 in Abidjan, Ivory Coast. He works and lives in Abidjan, Ivory Coast
He spent a considerable part of his younger years playing video games
and programming calculators, thus leading him to pursue a BSC in
Software Engineering at Westminster University in London, UK. Upon
graduation, he decided to leave the field of computers and return to his
home country where he currently works and resides.Sika refers to his work as “photomaking”; creating his photographs the same way others may create motion pictures. Close to the simulacrum, this approach consists of building an image rather than capturing it. It allows him to highlight the people and objects he shoots in a cinematographic methods, while creating out of the ordinary scenes.
The artistic commitment to the creation of the image shines at all stages. Paul Sika’s artistic sophistication, his masterful visual language and elevated sense of imagination, influenced by Ivorian popular culture, contemporary painting or even mythological scenes, are the tools
employed to give us such distinctive works.
His work was shown in a solo exhibition at the Galerie le LAB 2.0 in Abidjan in 2008 and
Collection II : L’appel de Lilian at the Galerie Cécile Fakhoury in 2012. He participated at 1:54
Contemporary African Art Fair, Somerset House in London in 2013 and 2014, the Dak’Art Off at the
Fondation Total in Dakar in 2014 and the Group Show at the Galerie Cécile Fakhoury – Abidjan.
In 2015, the Galerie Cécile Fakhoury – Abidjan exhibited his work at 1:54 Contemporary African Art Fair New York at Pioneer Works, Brooklyn, USA.
In 2015, he was chosen to present his work for Ivory Coast at the exhibition ‘‘Lumières d’Afrique’’ at the Théâtre National de Chaillot in Paris. In the same year, he exhibits his serie Collection II : L’appel de Lilian at the Galerie de l’Institut français as part of the International photography encounters of Fès in Morocco.
