other girls, propositioning passers-by.Peter, our Haitian cameraman, explained to her about our documentary, then walked her to the hotel around the corner for the interview. He didn’t want her to be seen driving off with foreigners. Her pimps might expect her to come back with a lot of cash.

"Here
on the border, our lives are finished," says Micheline Louis, a Haitian
ti machann living in Ansapit on the Dominican border. Recently I spent a
month here learning about the work of Louis and other Ansapit women,
who depend on trade with their Dominican neighbors to survive. While
their government turns a blind eye, local Dominican officials and army
battalions control the border trade to their advantage. "Our only option
is buying and reselling used clothes," the women say.
