 Nel 1850 Louis Agassiz commissionò una serie di fotografie per il suo studio sulle "razze". Il fotografo Joseph T. Zealy (1812-93) di Columbia, nella Carolina del Sud, realizzò per Agassiz una serie di dagherrotipi di schiavi nella zona intorno a Columbia. I soggetti fotografici erano un mix di schiavi africani e americani, uomini e donne, secondo le istruzioni di Agassiz.

Si tratta di rari ritratti di singoli schiavi realizzati negli Stati Uniti prima dell'emancipazione.

Llyfrgell Genedlaethol Cymru / The National Library of Wales from Wales/Cymru - 
This daguerreotype is from a pair, which are presented back to back. Originally the presentation would have created the look of a small velvet covered book, though the front cover is now lost. The other daguerreotype, fmc00292 (pz8238/4), is of a couple aged ca. 30 years old. Both are displayed behind ornate gold mounts. Dyddiad/Date: [ca.1850]

Ritratto di Samuel Clemens da giovane con in mano un bastoncino da stampa con le lettere SAM. Dagherrotipo; sesta lastra. Marchio della lastra: Scovill. Iscrizione nel pozzetto: G.H.[?] Jones [o Jonco?] / Hannibal Mo / 1850 / 29 novembre. Sul blocco della lastra: Samuel L. Clem-/ens - [illeggibile] / Scattata nel dicembre 1850 / Età 15 anni. Vale la pena notare che la foto è una riproduzione speculare (come tutti i dagherrotipi). Ciò è evidenziato dal fatto che le lettere sul bastoncino da stampa sono leggibili: in realtà sarebbero state invertite per essere stampate correttamente. Non ho dubbi che il giovane signor Clemens ne fosse a conoscenza.

 A south view from Eighth and Clark streets of a few boats on Chouteau's Pond. Some architecture can be seen on the other side of the pond which includes the octagonal roof of the Missouri Medical College and the tower of Kemper College, and a few clouds are in the sky. The picture is framed in the lower-left corner by a tree. "T.M. Easterly Daguerrean" is inscribed along the bottom edge, as well as "Chouteau's Pond." Along the right edge "Easterly Artist" is engraved. Title: Chouteau's Pond, View South from Eighth and Clark Streets.

Thomas Martin Easterly - Missouri History Museum 
 Two boys stand in front of the Old Spanish Fort, later Roy's Mill, on the Riverfront at the foot of Biddle Street. The Steamer Wyoming is at the river bank. At the time of this photograph, this structure was reported to be the only surviving remnant of the Spanish fortifications around St. Louis. Although it was built during the Spanish period, the tower that came to be known as the Old Spanish Fort was actually built in 1797 by Antoine Roy as a wind powered gristmill. It operated as a mill until 1810, and acted as the first north boundary of the city of St. Louis. It was demolished in 1856 to make way for riverfront development. Ironically, the steamboat Wyoming pictured in the Easterly daguerreotype, also met its fate in 1856, in a fire in Perkins, Illinois. Title: Old Spanish Fort, later Roy's Mill, Riverfront at foot of Biddle Street, Steamer Wyoming at river bank.

 Peter Lindell's Residence as seen from Collins and Bates Streets. Various objects and debris sits within the residence's fence. Barrels, a tall chain hoist, a door, a wooden shack, a boat, and machinery are among these objects. The river can be seen behind the residence and some architecture is on the other bank. A tower or smokestack rises in the center, and a mound of debris is in the foreground to the left. A streetlamp stands at the corner, and across the street from the house in another fenced-in area are large piles of lumber. Title: Peter Lindell's Residence, Collins and Bates Streets.
