An Appeal in Favor of That Class of Americans Called Africans by Lydia Child, Boston African American National Historic Site, 1833.
n the preface of her book, Lydia Marie Child says, "Reader, I beseech you not to throw down this volume as soon as you have glanced at the title." Written in 1833, Child not only called for the immediate emancipation of African Americans enslaved in the south but also condemned racial prejudice in the northern states. According to the UMASS Amherst Press, this book "provided the abolitionist movement with its first full-scale analysis of race and slavery." Boulevard du Temple, Paris, 3rd arrondissement, Daguerreotype. Made in 1838 by inventor Louis Daguerre, this is believed to be the earliest photograph showing a living person. It is a view of a busy street, but because the exposure lasted for 4 to 5 minutes (see shutter speed Daguerre photo explained) the moving traffic left no trace. Only the two men near the bottom left corner, one apparently having his boots polished by the other, stayed in one place long

Constanze Mozart and Max Keller Daguerreotype 1840
Karl Clemens della Croce - Unknown source
 Created: 1840

Constanze Mozart, wife of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, at 78 years of age, pictured front left in black 2 years before her death. (Her maiden name was Weber). Bavarian composer Max Keller is seated center front, and to his left is his wife Josefa. From left to right in rear: family cook, Philip Lattner (Keller's brother-in-law), Keller's daughters Luise and Josefa. The print is a 19th-century copy of the original daguerrotype photograph taken October 1840, at the home of composer Max Keller. This copy was found in the archive of the city of Altötting in 2004. The picture was probably taken by Burghausen photographer Karl Klemens della Croce.

Frauenkirche in Munich photographed on silver chloride paper by Carl August von Steinheil (1801 - 1870) and Franz von Kobell (1803 - 1882). The clock hands, showing around 12 o'clock, are visible, indicating a shorter exposure time. Dates are variously given as Autumn 1838 or early 1839. It is one of the earliest photographs taken in Germany. Steinheil and Kobell claimed that they made their first photographs before anyone had published anything on photography. Throughout April and mid-1839, Steinheil and Kobell presented their photographs on silver chloride paper of Munich.

Le Parthenon à Athènes / daguérreotype Lerebours ; Imp. de Bougeard ; Martens, sc. Abstract/medium: 1 print : etching and aquatint, color, with hand-coloring. Colored version of an engraving of the first photograph of the Parthenon. Print of an engraving based on a daguerreotype photograph taken by Pierre-Gustave Joly (Pierre-Gustave Joly de Lotbinière) in October 1839. Engraved by Frédéric Martens. First published in Excursions daguerriennes by Noël Paymal Lerebours in 1841. This colored version was published in Excursions daguerriennes, Paris, 1842, plate 22. Excerpts from the accompanying text, written by Pierre-Gustave Joly, the photographer, published in Excursions daguerriennes (the original text in French is in the public domain, like the image): "This view was taken in the autumn of 1839 ; I mention it, because it is the first time that the image of the Parthenon is fixed on a plate by the ingenious method of Daguerre, and because each year could bring new changes to the look of those famous ruins: a catastrophe could collapse them tomorrow, or a friendly and generous hand could raise those marbles scattered on the ground, and restore into an imposing whole what was the most beautiful of temples. [...] A mosque occupies a part of the interior, it is now used to store the precious debris found during the excavations of the Acropolis. Once, there had been a gunpowder magazine on the same spot, it caused, when it exploded, the collapse of a large part of the temple. On the columns, many white spots can be seen, they are chips of marble removed by bullets and cannonballs during the last war."

Nicéphore Niépce Oldest Photograph 1825
The oldest heliographic engraving known in the world. It is a reproduction of a 17th century Flemish engraving, showing a man leading a horse. It was made by the French inventor Nicéphore Niépce in 1825, with an heliography technical process. The Bibliothèque nationale de France bought it for €450,000 in 2002, deeming it as a "national treasure".

On November 20, Goupil-Fesquet captured another iconic monument, the Pyramid of Cheops, working from outside a gate that surrounded the complex. The scene, which is known today only through a subsequent engraving, is bucolic, with a saddled camel and three people quietly lounging in the foreground, the pyramid rising behind it in brilliant light. The exposure took 15 minutes.

Ras el Tin palace 7 November 1839
That image from November 7, 1839, is the first documented photograph of Egypt, and indeed of the African continent. The original plate is long gone, but an engraving from it shows an ornate outer gate with two men, perhaps a guard and a doorman, lounging in the open doorway. Behind, with tall windows and low-peaked roofs, stands the palace harem. A couple of trees lean over the fence.

Samuel Morse 1840
Daguerreotype of Morse in Paris. While the inscription on verso reads: "This daguerreotype of Father was taken in Paris in 1840 by Daguerre himself" this is not a daguerreotype and it is not possible to identify with certainty that the photographer was Louis Jacques Mandé Daguerre. Appears to lack the detail of a daguerreotype copy and too young for Morse.Morse wrote in 1841 "The snow is upon my temples". This type of photograph would have been made c 1850 when Morse was approaching 60 years of age. It does not reconcile with the LOC c 1845 image of Morse. Perhaps it is a son of Morse whose Morse's younger daughter would not have known.

The first published image of a photograph
Apparently the first published image of a photograph. Engraving or woodcut after a photogenic drawing by Dr. Golding Bird. Published in the April 20, 1839 issue of The Mirror of Literature, Amusement, and Instruction, illustrating an article "A Treatise on Photogenic Drawing".

The image shows, in the foreground, the columns of the Olympian Zeus and, in the background, the Acropolis. The notes of the photographer (see below) provide more details about the image. Print of an engraving based on a daguerreotype photograph taken by Pierre-Gustave Joly (Joly de Lotbinière) in October, 1839. Engraved by Appert. Published with the caption L'Acropolis à Athènes in Excursions daguerriennes, Noël Paymal Lerebours publisher, Paris, first published in 1840 and 1841. This reproduction is from a reedition published in 1842. Excerpt from the notes of Pierre-Gustave Joly (translated from the original French): "October 1839. View of the columns of Olympian Jupiter, taken from the left bank of the Ilyssos, from the stadium. There are 16 columns; above the last two columns of the main group, there is a small rough structure into which had lived an ascetic or holy man, so the people call those columns the fool's columns ; at their foot is seen the Arch of Hadrian on which is written on the side: here is the city of Hadrian. That arch is much taller than it looks here, the level of the base being below that of the columns of Jupiter. In the backgroud the Acropolis and the temple of Minerva or Parthenon."

This 1839 daguerreotype by Joseph Saxton is the earliest surviving American photographic image. Although described as "hardly more than a silhouette", architectural details of both buildings are evident, including shutters, window frames, and window panes. Saxton, an employee of the United States Mint, made the image in Philadelphia on 25 September or 16 October, 1839. The picture, showing the old arsenal and the cupola of the Philadelphia Central High School, was taken from a window of the Mint. This photo is believed to have been made by John William Draper in December 1839. It is one of few extant daguerreotypes so early where the subjects had to close their eyes to due to bright light needed for the exposure. On the right is possibly William Henry Goode, Drapers assistant. In the middle is probably Dorothy Catherine Draper (1807 - 1901), sister of John William Draper who would later be photographed by him in early 1840. The identity of the woman remains on the left remains unknown. The image was hand-colored, presumably by Dorothy Draper. It is speculated that this image was sent as a sort of Christmas token to their family far away in Virginia, where it was discovered many years later.
