Beggars Opera
I Beggars Opera erano un gruppo rock progressivo scozzese di Glasgow, Scozia, formato nel 1969 dal chitarrista Ricky Gardiner (nato il 31 agosto 1948 a Edimburgo, Scozia), dal cantante Martin Griffiths (nato l'8 ottobre 1949 a Newcastle upon Tyne) e dal bassista Marshall Erskine (basso/flauto). Dopo aver lavorato insieme alla costruzione di parti dell'autostrada M40 vicino a Beaconsfield, i tre ragazzi tornarono a Glasgow per cercare un organista e un batterista e reclutarono Alan Park (tastiere) (nato il 10 maggio 1951 a Glasgow, Scozia) e Raymond Wilson (batteria). Dopo un intenso periodo di prove, presero posto come musicisti fissi al Burns Howff club/pub in West Regent Street, nel centro di Glasgow. Seguirono tournée in Europa e la band ottenne successo in Germania, apparendo nel programma televisivo tedesco Beat-Club, poi al primo British Rock Meeting a Spira nel settembre 1971.
Nel 1970, dopo aver firmato con la Vertigo Records, la band registrò il suo primo album, Act One, e un singolo, "Sarabande", che entrò in classifica in diversi paesi europei. L'anno successivo, per il loro secondo album, Waters of Change, alla band si unirono Virginia Scott (mellotron) e Gordon Sellar (basso) (nato il 13 giugno 1947 a Glasgow, Scozia). Il singolo "Time Machine" tratto da quell'album ebbe successo in Germania, dove la band effettuò un lungo tour.
Erskine lasciò la band prima che registrassero il loro terzo album, Pathfinder (1972), che includeva una cover del successo di Richard Harris "MacArthur Park". Seguirono diversi altri cambi di formazione, con Pete Scott al posto di Griffiths nel 1972 e Linnie Paterson al posto di Pete Scott nel 1973. Con l'ultimo album del 1973, Get Your Dog Off Me, i Beggars Opera si ridussero a un trio composto da Gardiner, Park e Sellar.
Nel 1974/76 una nuova versione dei Beggars Opera registrò due album per la Jupiter Records in Germania: Sagittary, con Gardiner (chitarra), Pete Scott (voce), Virginia Scott (Mellotron) (nata nel 1948 a Glasgow, Scozia) e Mike Travis (batteria), e Beggars Can't Be Choosers con Clem Cattini al posto di Travis alla batteria.
Gardiner suonò per David Bowie nell'album Low e con Iggy Pop nell'album Lust for Life e nel suo tour Idiot del 1976. Scrisse insieme a Iggy Pop "The Passenger".
Alan Park (organista) ha lavorato con Cliff Richard per molti anni come direttore musicale.
Griffiths cantò e fece il presentatore nei circoli operai di Manchester e dintorni fino alla sua partenza per la Germania nel 1974. Andò in tournée e lavorò con Brian Auger, Osibisa, Ekseption, Klaus Doldinger, Ange e Can prima di firmare un contratto discografico con la Jupiter Records (Ralph Siegel) pubblicando tre singoli: "I’ll Be Coming Home", "Sitting on the Dock of the Bay" e "Israelites", che raggiunsero il terzo posto nella classifica disco tedesca nel 1977.
