Egbert Marday
Basically self taught. Started career as science
teacher 1978-84 but later studied for a Bachelor of Fine Art degree at the
Universities of Saskatchewan and Concordia in Canada 1984-88.
Presently a full time freelancer who works and lives
in Seychelles.
Participation in several group and also solo
exhibitions. Has won several awards and commissions.
Introduction
Theme
The interaction of people in a group especially in the daily life of
Seychelles, street scenes, music and dance groups seems to evoke expressions or
feelings that inspire.
“I paint their souls, their joys, pains, toils and hope”.
I like the tradition of blues music or our local “sega- moutya” where a
not-so-pleasant situation, through its quality of sounds and humor, it can
bring back a sense of hope or redemption. As in music the expressions take both
figurative and abstract forms.
Technique
Painter/sculptor working mainly in mixed media-acrylic, collage, oil,
pastel, wood, metal, paper maché, p.o.p, resin etc.
On the more commercial side, a landscape artist constructing artificial
rocks and water features and other concrete ornaments.
Egbert Marday’s work is mostinteresting when he works from the descriptive to the more expressive. This is
evident in the vivid colour tones.
Furthermore his artwork as a
sculptor has an effect of plasticity in his paintings.
His work also displays elements of
the “Seychellitude” if you will without being intrusively clichéd

Artist Egbert Marday
Painting souls, joys, pains, toils and hopes
Visual artist, painter and sculptor Egbert Marday’s paintings are currently on display at Jouel, Kenwyn House on Francis Rachel Street until the end of the month between 9am to 5pm on weekdays, and 2pm on Saturdays.
Extracts from Jouel’s artist bio
The 61 year old artist claims to be mostly self taught and takes a lot of inspiration from the daily life of Seychelles such as street scenes, music and dance groups that evoke expressions or feelings. “I paint their souls, joys, pains, toils and hopes,” says Egbert Marday.
Born in November 1953, Mr Marday started his career in 1978 as a Biology and Integrated Science teacher for O’ and A’Levels. But in 1984, Egbert Marday changed his career path by enrolling in a Bachelor of Fine Arts at the Universities of Concordia and Saskatchewan, Canada.
After completing his degree, Art had become his passion and he became a freelance artist and sculptor in 1990 until this very day.
As an artist Egbert Marday says that he has different inspirations and each one inspires a different kind of painting. “I like the tradition of blues music and our local ‘sega-moutya’ where a not-so-pleasant situation, through its quality of sounds and humour can bring back a sense of hope or redemption,” he explains.
“As in music, the expressions take both figurative and abstract forms,” the artist adds.
Egbert Marday works mainly on mixed media-acrylic, collage, oil, pastel, wood, metal, paper maché, plaster of paris and resin. In fact he lays hands on any material that attracts him.
Over the years, Mr Marday has participated in several group exhibitions and has also put up solo exhibitions. This has led him to win awards and commissions such as the Grand Prix Biennale Seychelles (1992), the carvings on Roman Catholic doors, Natural History museum, sculptors placed outside the Victoria Post Office, Leve Debouye at the Micro Enterprise premise as well as installing artificial rocks and water features in hotels and some private homes.
The brand coordinator of Jouel, Maureen Leon told TODAY that “on a monthly rotational basis JOUEL offers local artists, the exclusivity to use the first floor of Kenwyn House to showcase their artwork to an audience of an average of 2000 walk-ins per month. This is part of JOUEL’s commitment to support local arts and culture and this has been ongoing since 2005.”
She went on to say that Jouel works closely with local artists, writing their profiles and sharing their information with any clients interested so as to promote the artists’ network. “The exhibition allows JOUEL to stay connected and co-build a bright image of art in Seychelles,” added Ms. Leon.
Jouel Kenwyn House does not charge artists for displaying their work, except for a fixed commission based on sales. The company pledges to continue featuring the work of Seychellois artists on its main floor despite the limited space available.
The prices of the painting on show in the exhibition start from SCR 5000. Interested clients can view more of Egbert Marday’s work at his studio ‘Kreasyon Beau-et-Mien’ at La Misere.
