The photographic van in the left background probably belongs to Roger Fenton. The Photographic Society was set up in 1853 for 'the promotion of the Art and Science of Photography, by the interchange of thought and experience amongst Photographers'.

Eight male servants stand at the back and three women sit at the front. The woman on the right of the photograph is holding a baby. The collodion positive process was popular during the 1850s and 1860s. An underexposed collodion negative on glass was backed with a black opaque coating to create a unique positive image.
