Linnaeus Tripe - Photograph by Linnaeus Tripe with a view looking towards the ornately embellished minaret of a mosque at Amarapura in Burma (Myanmar), from a portfolio of 120 prints. Tripe, an officer from the Madras Infantry, was the official photographer attached to a British diplomatic mission to King Mindon Min of Burma in 1855. This followed the British annexation of Pegu after the Second Anglo-Burmese War in 1852. Aside from official duties, the mission was instructed to gather information regarding the country and its people. Tripe's architectural and topographical views are of great documentary importance as they are among the earliest surviving photographs of Burma. Amarapura, on the Irrawaddy (Ayeyarwady) river, was twice the capital of the Burmese kings of the Konbaung dynasty: from 1782 (the year of its foundation by King Bodawpaya) to 1823 and again from 1837 to 1860, after which Mandalay, 11 km to the north, became capital. Amarapura was the site of the first British Embassy to Burma in 1795, and played host again to Tripe's Mission. Tripe wrote of this mosque,'This is in China Street. There are some thousands of Mahomedans and numbers of Mosques in and about Amerapoora. The architecture of the latter partakes much of the Burmese element'.

Nadar - Gustave Doré was a painter
primarily known for his illustrations of books, including a version of
the Bible. He was a good friend of Nadar, who photographed Doré many
times, even on his deathbed. Doré appears here in the flush of newly
earned celebrity, a jaunty young man in checked trousers and a scarf.
His sweep of hair cascades across his head as if blown by the wind; his
overcoat gapes open to reveal a leg poised to carry him forward, as
though he has places to go and can only sit still for a moment. Although
the chair in which he sits is clearly visible, he appears to hover
unanchored above it. Nadar has captured the spontaneity and energy of a

Halebid (ancient Dwarasamudra), a small town in the Hassan district, was
once the capital of the Hoysala dynasty of the southern Deccan which
flourished from the 12th to the 14th century. Two devastating attacks by
the Delhi Sultanate led to its end by the mid-14th century.
The Hoysalas were prolific temple builders and the site is renowned for
the remnants of architecture and sculpture fashioned out of the
chloritic schist in the region. The most famous monument here is the
Hoysaleshwara temple dedicated to Shiva as Nataraja, the Cosmic Dancer,
which was built for Ketamalla, an official of Vishnuvardhana (ruled c.
1108-42).
This photograph illustrates the entrance to the columned mandapa or hall
to the south. Large sculptures of guardian figures or dvarapalas flank

He published his process freely and derived no personal benefit from it. He died penniless in 1857. Archer sits in a studio pose common at the time, pausing as if reading from a book, with heavily patterned drapes hanging at his left shoulder. The collodion positive process (also commonly known as ambrotype) was popular during the 1850s and 1860s. An underexposed collodion negative on glass was backed with a black opaque coating to create a unique positive image.
