Kerry Smith

About Kerry Smith

I’m an artist living in the Northeastern region of the United States. My birthplace is in North Carolina which is the Southern region and where I lived for many years. I have also lived in Illinois and Texas. Much of my artwork is created from direct observation of another person, a life model. At other times I may prefer a more contemplative slower pace and the limitless possibilities of working without an external source. With a life model, I’m working with an alla prima intention. When the allotted time ends the pose I usually consider the work finished. The time constraint fosters urgency, sustaining a more intuitive response while an effort to gain semblance provides a framework that purposefully unites with any meandering expressive tendencies. On a much earlier career path as a machinist I gained an appreciation of mechanical precision and polished craft. Though after a few years in the trade I became restless for a different pathway which eventually led me to become an artist. It seems my way of making images is often an exchange between being precise and adventurous, rational and seeking imperfection, having some knowledge and desiring bliss. The most satisfying images are those in which discoveries beyond my intention are realized, where I find myself surprised or slightly bewildered.
