Collezione Borghese, Statua eroica, I secolo a.C. Rinvenuta a Tuscolo, vicino a Monte Porzio (Italia). Questo tipo di statua nuda, raffigurante una figura illustre in atteggiamento eroico – in questo caso un generale – compare nell'arte romana già a partire dal I secolo a.C. Sul retro della corazza è presente la firma dello scultore greco Ofelio, figlio di Aristonida, che qui copiò un Marte noto da un esemplare rinvenuto a Ostia. Documentata per la prima volta nel 1599 nella collezione del duca Altemps, l'opera fu acquisita dal cardinale Scipione Borghese (1576-1623). Si tratta indubbiamente di un'immagine di un pescatore, un tipo scultoreo tipico del periodo ellenistico. Ampiamente restaurata e collocata in una vasca dalla superficie rosso sangue, fu identificata come Seneca, precettore di Nerone, costretto al suicidio. La statua raggiunse una notevole fama: Rubens la rese il soggetto de La morte di Seneca (Monaco di Baviera, Alte Pinakothek).
