With his departure from the traditional workshop in Bregenz and his move to a new studio building in Schwarzach about two years ago, a time of upheaval and reorientation for Edgar Leissing has definitely revealed itself to the outside world. A sample catalogue book, designed by the artist and graphic designer himself and published at the same time, was just an interim result. Leissing, born in Bregenz in 1960, recently spoke of himself, I dont invent pictures myself, I take pictures and details of pictures from the immense flood of images that overwhelm us on a daily basis from billboards, magazines, television and the computer. In the meantime the artist confesses: I no longer steal pictures. This confession of a picture hunter and picture junkie is a quantum leap in these mass media times. Knowing that it is photographs that the artist is talking about photos still being things you find, even if you select your subjects and take them in person - qualifies this statement somewhat. As his love of pictures remains, Edgar Leissing is still on the hunt for pictures even if he is now out on a hunt with a camera in tow, be it at his weekly nude sketching session in his studio or while out on his travels to faraway places.BodyFusionsThe new oil paintings originate from the Sense Smashing Mutations series and are a continuation of the theme of Hermaphrodite Body Collage, a topic that Leissing continues to grapple with on a profound basis. Based on Hermaphroditus, a figure from Greek mythology, son of Aphrodite and Hermes, who became a hermaphrodite by means of fusion with the nymph Salmacis, Leissings paintings combine people who are not usually aware of each others existence. On screens and in pictures bodies grow together that in real life may never have been in the same room at the same time, yet in the pictures they become one in perfect unity. The motifs are based on photographic images that originate from weekly nude drawing sessions. In analogue times Leissing would have had to sample his subjects by means of slide projector, but now digital processing on the computer allows for more and has opened new opportunities to try out things. Finer, faster and more versatile suddenly combinations of 5 to 6 superimposed levels is made possible. The sketch material from the computer screen is transferred to canvases whose backgrounds are unequal and much more fluid and lighter, less pastose than they really are. The painter, however, has maintained his habit of not squeezing out his used paintbrushes in a cloth, but on a new canvas, so that there is always something from the old pictures that gets transferred into the new ones. Leissings leitmotifs are and still remain extreme body movements even if the poses of the dancers who have modelled for the latest pieces of work, in most cases also have a very erotic touch.Say it with FlowersFlowers have always been part of the visual world of Edgar Leissing and the artist continues to indulge in this fondness for colourful blooms. The youngest Art Flower Art Crafts are a continuation of the floral theme of the 2002 balancing Rose Skill Artist and the openly erotic Fruit Flesh Flower Girl of 2005. During a visit to China in the vicinity of Guangzhou in the autumn of 2008, I had the opportunity to visit several factories and photograph people working in production jobs. The selected images came from companies that for example produce high-quality chrome kitchenware for German brands or outdoor clothing for Austrian manufacturers. With the requirement of having to get all photographs authorized so as to not fall under suspicion of industrial espionage, in my collages I have consequently replaced the products themselves with watercolours of flowers from a Swiss antique dealer. It is significant that the first presentation of this 30-part series was in the Museum of New Art in Detroit. Against this backdrop of the global economic crisis, we can see a shift in values between Central Europe, Southern China and North America in small format. explains Edgar Leissing. Perhaps it is simply the artists quest for the perfect symbiotic picture in which everything exists and is inextricably melted into one. Just as it is to some extent realized in Leissings picture in which a female body seems to slip into a male body (or vice versa). Like a snapshot, the picture seems to hold onto the act of transformation and just a tiny detail gives away the two-ness of both of the bodies. Ariane Grabher
