Batman n. 600-699 2002 - 2010

Batman

Batman #600 - The Scene of the Crime released by DC Comics on April 1, 2002.

The Gotham City Police Department begins a manhunt for Bruce Wayne, who has escaped from custody. In his Batman persona, Wayne has returned to his manor, and specifically to the Batcave beneath it, remembering many of the pains of his life so far, the complications of his double life. Here he is confronted by Batgirl, Robin and Nightwing, and, via computer, by Oracle. They want to know why he didn't tell them that he was planning an escape, and are shocked when he says he's not going to try to prove Bruce Wayne's innocence. He also refuses to confirm to them that he is indeed innocent. The evidence is strong, particularly as it seems Vesper had indeed discovered that Bruce and Batman were one and the same.

Batman declares that Bruce Wayne is nothing more than a mask, and that from now on there simply is no Bruce Wayne, a declaration that is shocking to the others, particularly as Nightwing (as Dick Grayson) is Wayne's adopted son. After a tussle with Nightwing, Batman leaves the cave, the others wondering what on earth is going on. Batman then hits the streets, feeling free now that Bruce Wayne is no more.

Since his escape from police custody as Bruce Wayne, the only associate that Batman maintains any contact with is Alfred. But Batman has work to do. Answering the signal, he finds Commissioner Akins, informing him of a serial killer enacting grim vengeance against Gotham's criminal underworld. And now it appears that this vigilante killer has abducted two city councilmen, who will die unless Batman can save them tonight.

Batman #605 - Courage released by DC Comics on September 1, 2002.

Batman finally knows who killed Vesper Fairchild, how they did it, and why they did it. And he needs the help of those close to him to bring the killer down - and to get this, he must first reconcile with them. Most of the legwork had been carried out by Batgirl, Nightwing, Alfred, Oracle and Robin, but for the first time everything is assembled:

Lex Luthor has been in constant conflict with Bruce Wayne since No Man's Land, and Wayne's opposition to his presidency made him decide to get rid of this irritation and pay for someone to perform a character assassination on the man. Through an agent known as Amherst, one of the world's top assassins was hired - David Cain, who also happens to be Batgirl's father and to have trained a young Bruce Wayne. Knowing of Wayne's other life, Cain decided to carry out the crime in a way which would expose his secret identity, or at worst create discord between him and those around him. For a time he succeeded, but now they must go after him - preferably without Batgirl.

However, when they find him, they instead find a series of doubles, and the real deal shows up at the Batcave and attacks Oracle - he had access to their communications channel. Thankfully, Batman had anticipated this, and is waiting in the shadows to take him on. Cain reveals his utter contempt for Batman/Wayne and tries to make him into what Cain is - but Batman refuses to go over the edge into unnecessary violence, and Cain soon hands himself over to the authorities. Luthor is not pleased, particularly because he cannot locate agent Amherst. Perhaps this is because he is in Arkham Asylum under a different name.

Overview
As Batman rescues a boy from mercenary kidnappers, the Dark Knight realized it was all ran by an unlikely foe-Killer Croc! Or is other the responsable?

Synopsis

A physically altered Killer Croc kidnaps Edward Lamont IV, heir to the Lamont Chemical fortune. He is holding him for a ten million dollar ransom. Batman tracks the boy down and rescues him and gets into a fight with Croc. Batman defeats Croc by using a hyper-sonic device that sends Croc reeling over with pain. During the fight however, Catwoman arrives and sneaks off with the ransom money.

Batman takes off swinging after Catwoman. He's hot on her tail, but Catwoman leaps from rooftop to rooftop always two steps ahead of him. As Batman closes in for the capture, something cuts through his batline. He falls all the way to the street below and is knocked unconscious. The fall, and his recent battle with Croc severely injures him.

Catwoman meanwhile meets up with Poison Ivy and hands her the ten million. Something is definitely odd here, as Catwoman appears to be submissive to Poison Ivy's charms.

As yet, no one knows who cut the batline.

Batman #663 - The Clown at Midnight released by DC Comics on April 2007.

Note: this story was written in prose with some illustrations.

At a cemetary, eight of the Joker's former henchmen attend a funeral which ends with them all dying from toxic flowers. Batman, suspecting the Joker, investigates and finds a bloody Joker card at the scene.

The Joker is still locked in Arkham Asylum after being shot in the face by a Batman impersonator. He has undergone massive surgery and electro-shock treatments. As Batman confronts a bandaged Joker, he asks him who he's working with. Batman soon discovers that he has been working with a speech therapist whom Batman suspects is really Harley Quinn.

Harley has been carrying out the Joker's plan to be reborn. Part of that plan involves killing off his former henchmen. Batman finds Harley but she manages to escape.

Back at Arkham, the Joker manages to escape. Removing his bandages, he appears to do some surgery of his own. His face is now stitched into a permanent smile. Harley arrives and informs Joker that Batman will soon be there as he wished. It seems the plan was for Batman to be killed at midnight. As Batman walks in, the true plan was for all of Joker's henchmen to die, including Harley. Batman was just to be there to witness.

Saddened by the Joker's attempt to kill her, Harley breaks free of his grasp. Apologizing for breaking his arm while escaping, the Joker forgives her but insists she look more like he does as he holds a blade to her face. Harley tells him to do it if that's what he wants.

Batman and Joker fight. Batman puts down the Joker with a single punch. He is then shot by Harley who tells him, "You gotta stop ignoring me, Mistah Jay."

Joker is seemingly dragged back to his padded cell.

Batman #664 - Three Ghosts of Batman released by DC Comics on May 1, 2007.

In Gibraltar, Bruce Wayne walks away from a number of unconscious man-bats as he recieves a phone call. The call is from a female celebrity that wants to hook up with him the next day. Bruce Wayne para-glides on top of a mountain where Jezebel is waiting for him. As they ski down the mountain, a man in a small, one-person helicopter is following them. Bruce sees the sun shine of something the man is holding and throws one of his ski poles at the copter. The pole causes the copter to crash. It turns out the man was just a paparazzo. Bruce replies, "Oops." At dinner with Jezebel, she says he looks sad. Bruce says it's simply because he had a long weekend. She tells him that he can talk to her. Her father was assassinated so she knows what it's like to lose your parents. Bruce tells her he lost them a long time ago and that he "got over it." The look in his eyes suggest otherwise.

In Gotham, a pimp named DeShawn is talking with some shady police officers. There seems to be some problem with his girls not coming back after being with them. Batman arrives and takes out the officers. He wants to have a "word" with DeShawn. One of the girls tells Batman that the officers are monsters. Batman tells them to take him to where the missing girls last went. In an abandoned building he finds the remains of a few street girls. In one room, there one is still alive but she is barely coherent. Behind him, stands a huge man dressed in a version of his Bat-suit. This reminds him of the other cop that had dressed up as him and shot the Joker in the face. This causes him to think of the files in the black casebook. The apparent steroid enhanced individual chases Batman and grabs him by the cape. He throws him out of a window and follows after him. As Batman runs the different angles and clues in his head, he tries to stay conscious until, "KRAKT." The big man walks away as Batman is left unconscious on the ground with a huge footprint on his back.

Batman #665 - The Black Casebook released by DC Comics on June 1, 2007.

Batman recovers from his encounter with the drugged killer from last issue. Batman seeks to discover the secrets of Casebook X. Plus it is revealed what happened to Talia and Damien.

After being attacked by the hulking Bane/Batman, a battered Batman lies face down in his own blood and vomit. He tries to get up but can't muster enough strength to stay standing. Luckily, some of the prostitutes that Batman had stood up for earlier that night (see last issue) showed up and one decided to help. She puts him in her car and starts driving. Along the way, Batman wakes up and tells the woman to an escape tunnel in another part of Gotham. The tunnel actually has an entrance to one of Wayne's buildings, so after he gets dropped off, he takes an elevator to the penthouse, calls Alfred, and passes out.

While he's sleeping, Bruce has a nightmare of his son Damien in front of three twisted versions of himself. Two are versions he's encountered, the gun-wielding Batman and the over-muscled Bane version, and the third is new, but hidden in shadow. Bruce wakes up screaming and finds his wounds bandaged and Alfred and Tim waiting at his bedside. Bruce fills them in on what happened. He said that the Batman he fought looked like Bane, like he was designed to trigger his fear of having his back broken again. Alfred informs him that his spinal brace had been shattered but his back was intact. Tim decides to go after the impostor but Bruce tells him not to because the man is hopped up on Monster Serum and Venom. He goes anyway.

Bruce tells Alfred to get The Black Casebook, a file of all the strange and unexplainable things that Batman had come across over the years. Things like vampires, aliens and time travel. Batman wants it so he can look up a vision he once had, one where he saw the three versions of himself. The third version, the one he had yet to come across, had sold his soul to the devil and destroyed Gotham. At the time, he had thought them to be nothing more than hallucinations warning him of what he might have (or might still) become. Now he thought there was something more.

Getting out of bed, Bruce says he's going after the hulking Batman. He rubs a shirt he wore while going off on shareholders in the boardroom the day before and says that the one thing alpha males are programmed to respect is alpha male plus.

Robin arrives in the slums where the Bane/Batman stays and abuses his women just as the monster is leaving. He drives his motorcycle right at the man and tries to take him down with fancy moves and garbage can lids. He avoids the big man's grasp for a while but eventually gets caught. He's about to be slammed into the ground when the Batmobile pulls up and slams into the fake Batman. The real Bats shoots out of the car in a emergency eject seat and grabs Robin on the way up. From the seat he shoots rockets at the enemy and makes his car electrocute him. When they land, Batman tells Robin that he doesn't have to prove anything to him. He sends Robin to check on the women and takes on the big man himself, knocking him down a hill and beats him down with some pipes. He tries to get some answers about the third Batman but cops arrive and pull guns on him. Batman knows they're all dirty so he blows up his Batmobile behind them and uses the distraction to escape.

Batman sets up a meet with Gordon and they talk on a rooftop. Batman tells him about the two crazy cops running around in his costume and Gordon reveals that the the corruption goes all the way up to the mayor. In fact, the mayor is trying to get Gordon to ignore all the Batman stuff.

Elsewhere, Talia has just beaten Damien almost to death while testing his fighting skills. She says that he's definitely his father's son, and his mother's. She orders that he be taken to have all his organs replaced so he'll live. When she gets out of a shower, she gets news that Bruce has been out on another date with a supermodel, and she's not pleased.

In Venice, Bruce kisses his supermodel date as someone watches through binoculars.

Meanwhile, his delirious mind travels back to a defining adventure in the life of young Bruce Wayne...the hunt for his parents' killer! This special flashback tale also revisits Batman's life-changing Thogal ritual in the caves of Nanda Parbat!

Flashback to Batman's Thogal ritual, he thinks back to the killer of his parents.

Joe Chill sits in a room surrounded by armed men. He's on edge and asks them if he's safe there. He goes on to the men that in his day, the streets were different. They didn't have costumed bad guys and each had to survive on their own. One of the men tries telling him to relax. If there is a Batman, they'll take care of him if he tries coming. Joe keeps rambling and says he should have taken out the kid too. He says he couldn't because he was like his boy, that he lost.

He keeps talking then looks up in shock. All his men are knocked out and a mask lies where one of them stood. Batman has been there and is now in costume behind him. He laughs as Joe calls for more men. Batman gets away, still laughing.

Scenes change as a young Bruce Wayne discovers bats flying out of a well on their property. A funeral with those close to him carrying a coffin (with Bruce Wayne no where in sight). Bat-Mite talks to him.

Back to Batman and Joe Chill. Batman holds a gun to his head. He tells him that Thomas Wayne died from the first bullet to his chest. Martha could have survived if she didn't have a weak heart and an ambulance could have gotten to her before she lost too much blood. He tells Joe that he brought back his gun. He left one bullet in it. He gives it to him and tells him it's his. Joe is confused then realizes that he's the one that created Batman. If the other "bad guys" found out, they'd kill him without mercy. He says he can't live like that. Batman stands out on the roof as a lone gunshot is heard.

Batman is wondering why he's thinking about all of this. Thogal happened last year. He asks when did he die. He realizes that he had a heart attack on the roof of the GCPD. He's been saved and brought back to life. Looking up to see who it is, it turns out he's strapped to an old chair and Sleeper is dressed in a bat-costume standing over him with a drill in his hand.

A “Faces of Evil” issue starring Catwoman! Continuing from this month’s DETECTIVE COMICS #852, Selina Kyle’s path of vengeance against Hush knows no bounds! After confronting the man responsible for nearly destroying her life, Selina’s wrath propels her into a downward spiral. With Tommy Elliot almost certain to suffer dire consequences, could Catwoman’s humanity be next to perish?

In Vietnam, Catwoman continues to play with Hush. She's happy to be able to return some of the hurt she suffered at his hands. She latter explains to him how she ended up in the area. She tracked her way to endangered animal poachers. As Catwoman, she managed to worm herself into their operation. But to fully take them down, she needs "Bruce Wayne." She says since the poachers don't know that he's not Bruce, her idea could work. He says he'll go along with her plan in order to get out alive but afterwards, he says he'll get back at her. He leaves with two of her personal aides. When the poachers go after millionaire Bruce Wayne, she'll let the caged animals loose.

As Catwoman begins releasing the animals, she is discovered by the leader. They begin fighting and she is saved by one of the animals. As Hush continues his escape, he sees Catwoman leaving in a helicopter most likely paid for with his money. He then offers to pay the two aides fifty thousand each to help him track her down. They tell him he can't afford them as they reveal themselves to be Nightwing and Robin. They explain how there were able to follow his trail as "Bruce." Hush decides to try to defeat them and take his chances in the jungle with his wounds. He doesn't stand a chance. Because he looks like Bruce, they can't put him in jail or Arkham. He is now their prisoner in a private penthouse at Wayne Tower.

Detailed Summary

In the epilogue to Battle for the Cowl, The issue starts years ago as Bruce Wayne is suiting up as Batman while talking to Alfred about his excursions in the tabloids as Bruce Wayne, thankful for the false reports so he can focus on the Riddler. Mid-sentence there is a power surge in the cave and suddenly there is an attack, Batman protects Alfred, but soon realizes that the attack is weak upon impact, something not meant to harm. As he looks up he spots the culprit atop the Giant Penny and asks a young Dick Grayson, dressed as Robin what he was doing. This was all part of a plan Dick was supposed to execute on the streets, but Dick realized this wouldn't have worked so he pulled an audible and aced the Batman. He tells him to watch out because soon he will be the head monkey in charge and he will be in the cowl.

Moving ahead to present time, a distraught Alfred looks upon the Bat-Suit worn by Bruce Wayne, now encased in glass as he thinks about the process and dealings with a death in the family. Meanwhile, Gotham City Police Department have their hands filled in the city, which appears as a war zone. The PD seem lost until the Batmobile arrives and takes care of the scene in a quick second. Alfred monitors the activity and in the car it is revealed that Dick Grayson, Nightwing, is in the car. Alfred commends Nightwing's actions, but Nightwing quickly states HE would have gotten out of the car. Alfred then asks him why Batman didn't get out of the car. Alfred then asks him if he is even in the Batman uniform. Damian, meanwhile, states only Batman should drive the car.

Four Weeks Ago Superman and Wonder Woman arrive in the Batcave to give Dick and Tim the cowl Bruce was wearing when he "died." Superman then asks if Batman had a contingency plan, because that's how Batman was, always 10 moves ahead of everyone else. Tim tells them maybe they're talking to the wrong people, as Alfred enters with drinks for the guests. Wonder Woman tells him this must be hard and Superman asks if he's all right. Alfred replies "No Sir. I am not. My son has died. Later, Dick is outside of Wayne Manor stating that he always knew Bruce wouldn't live to an old age, that underneath everything Batman was, he was only human. He knew all this, but wasn't ready to lose him just yet. Alfred then tells Dick he understands, but to have a funeral for Batman would destroy Batman's legacy, all that he was. At an unmarked grave Clark Kent, Diana Prince, Oliver Queen and Dinah Lance are all shocked to hear Dick Grayson state Batman is not dead. Dick elaborates and tells them that acknowledging to the world that Batman is dead will ruin Batman's Legacy. Batman Lives. Always.

Damian, meanwhile has left the cave and is out hunting criminals, specifically Doctor Phosphorus. Damian is soon overwhelmed until Nightwing arrives. He informs Damian that he doesn't feel pain the way he is fighting the Doctor and the authorities will be there soon and tells him to get in the damn car. Back at the Cave Dick realizes that the Cave isn't him, it was Bruce and as a result they are going to relocate to a bunker because it fits his personality more than anything else. His take of Batman is his own role, not a carbon copy of Bruce's. He tells Alfred there are going to be times when he has to work alone, much like Bruce did.

Two weeks Later, the Scarecrow begins an attack on the town and Gordon seems very worried about this. As officers try to reach him, they are infected with toxin. Scarecrow appears to be winning, until a spotlight shines in his face and Dick Grayson's Batman appears and likely saves the day simply stating that's why he's here.
