Melissa Faithful for Art-Sheep
Nike Schroeder is a Los Angeles based artist whose work is a complex combination of textile and installation.
Creating her palette with fiber, Schroeder actually uses fiber as paint, by embroidering it in an abstract way. The artist creates an imagery that is pictorial but also gives a sense of a space installation. The details of her work in combination with her traditional technique and contemporary aesthetics, have created a series of interesting, expressive artworks.
Her beautiful -often nude, portraits of women, include an intense eroticism, with their large size captivating the viewer. The artist has worked on the eyes and the features of her characters, in a way that functions as almost bringing them to life, with these women’s eyes looking straight at the viewer and their bodies becoming vessels of desire.
Gran parte del suo lavoro figurativo esamina la bellezza idealizzata della forma femminile. I suoi pezzi sono intricati e mai del tutto finiti: le estremità sciolte dei fili appesi sono diventate infatti una sua caratteristica distintiva.
Quando ha finito la scuola superiore si è iscritta all'Università di Amburgo in studi economici lavorando nel frattempo in un'agenzia di design. Si è ben presto resa conto che il suo cammino stava per metterla in una direzione diversa e ha scelto di andare in Guatemala. E’ stato un anno di libertà fatto di disegni, cani randagi, avocado e amicizie importanti.
Quando è tornata ha intrapreso gli studi (completati nel 2009) in Art Pedagogy per diventare terapeuta d'arte. E' stato in questo periodo che ha incontrato il ricamo: “è stato il mio compagno. Oggi è uno dei migliori che ho”, dice l’artista.
